Learn Thai Lesson: Public Conversation 1 (Audio)

learn thai language

If you learn the Thai language you might already know that Thai is spoken very different in various parts of the country. In our lessons we generally use “Bangkok Thai” which is understood throughout the whole country. Part of learning a language is also training your listening skills and these lessons are exactly for that. First you hear a short conversation and then we explain you each part of the conversation step by step.

This not only trains your listening skills but also gives you an understanding about the sentence structure and speaking habits of the Thai language. The video of this lesson, transcript and PDF are available for Premium Members.

In this lesson a husband comes home to his wife and brings another women with him. You hear what they say to each other right after he comes through the door.

Complex Thai Vowels (Video)

Learn the complex Thai vowels in this lesson. Each vowel has either a long or short sound. In the Thai language, each vowel is pronounced with either a short or a long duration which alters the meaning of words! This is very much unlike English in which the meaning of words remains the same no matter how long you pronounce a vowel sound. Most Thai vowels can not stand alone and are either placed before, after, below or above consonants. Complex vowels consist of several parts and can be placed around the consonants. Please refer to our Thai alphabet reference for a transcript of this lesson.

Thai Vowels (Video)

Learn the Thai vowels in this video lesson. They are part of the Thai alphabet and this is the first of two lessons that focuses on the Thai vowels. This is nothing for you if you just want to learn some “Holiday Thai Phrases”. The Thai alphabet is a bit more advanced topic, and this lesson helps mostly people who learn to read and write the Thai language.

Learn Thai Lesson 4: Counting and Numbers in Thai (Video)

This is the video for our Learn Thai Lesson about Numbers in Thai. No matter if you count the beers or the days until you come back to Thailand now you can do this in Thai. A video makes this probably much easier as many people are visual learners.

You will learn to count from 0 to 300.000 and beyond. We skipped some numbers though and focused on explaining how the system works. Please also visit our old post for the transcript.

The Thai Alphabet (Video)

In this short lesson you hear Jo saying the names of the 44 consonants (Thai: พยัญชนะ) (phá-yan-chá-na) of the Thai alphabet (Thai: อักษรไทย) (àk-sŏn). Learning the alphabet is one of the first steps if you want to learn how to read Thai. While listening to this lesson keep in mind that the first sound of each of the names is also how the consonant sounds.

Besides the consonants the Thai alphabet has 15 vowel symbols (Thai: สระ) (sà-rà) that combine into at least 28 vowel forms, and four tone marks (Thai: วรรณยุกต์ or วรรณยุต) (wan-ná-yúk or wan yút).

The Thai language is a member of the Tai group of the Tai-Kadai language family that originated in Southern China. Other languages belonging to this group are spoken today in Laos, Vietnam and in some parts of China.

Learn Thai Lesson 3: Food and Drinks in Thailand (Video)

This is the video to our third lesson about Thai food and eating out in Thailand. Whenever you visit Thailand don’t miss out on the variety of great food here. Thai food has a sensational mix of spices that will make almost every foreigners taste buds go crazy. But don’t worry in this lesson you also learn how to ask for “not spicy” food.

Learn Thai Lesson 2: Dating and Sweet Things (Video)

This is the video for our second lesson about dating in Thailand. You will learn relationship and dating related phrases.

Learn Thai Lesson 1: Introduction and Basic Words and Phrases (Video)

This is the video for our first lesson. We are right now in the process of adding videos of our old lessons that we just have as mp3 files. We already updated all transcripts and added the right transliteration that also shows the tone marks.

Please visit our site about the Thai transliteration system to learn more about the system that we use. It is the one also used by one of the most popular Thai phrase books, the Thai: Lonely Planet Phrasebook.

If you just start out with the language don’t get too caught up in learning a Thai transliteration system. It does help but at the end of the day it really matters what you hear and say.

As part of our little renovation that is going on we also got rid of the cheering sound in the mp3s of the Dating and Food lesson.

The Learn Thai Podcast Premium Course launches on Monday and we also prepare some new free lessons for next week. Enjoy your weekend!
