We have launched our Thai Reading & Writing Course a few weeks ago and to help you to get started we publish this PDF file that will help you to understand the Thai Keyboard Layout. You can just print the PDF and put it next to your keyboard.

In the long run it makes sense that you get a Thai keyboard if you plan to type more. Just stop by a mall next time you are in Thailand and pick up a cheap Thai keyboard for around 300 – 500 THB.

While working on the redesign of the site I got more into WordPress Themes again and came up with this minimal theme design with a touch of typography. It is rather elegant and for all those who like to keep things nice and simple. You can find a demo here.

It is of course fully widgetized, tested on WordPress 2.1. / 2.9.1. / 2.9.2 and plays along nicely with my ajax category post dropdown plugin.

Download the Simple Things in Life WordPress Theme here.

To install the theme just unzip the file and upload the “simplethings” folder into your theme directory (http://yourdomain.com/wp-content/themes/). If you have any questions you can contact me via email.

I wrote this little WordPress Plugin for the upcoming redesign of our website. It will help users to navigate quickly to a certain lesson.

Ajax Categories Posts Dropdown Download

Here is the general description:
Lists all categories in a dropdown box and after selecting one the second dropdown box gets populated via Ajax with all posts from this category. You can use this plugin as widget (with some options) or just add the function to display the two dropdown boxes somewhere in your template files.

If you learn the Thai language you might already know that Thai is spoken very different in various parts of the country. In our lessons we generally use “Bangkok Thai” which is understood throughout the whole country. Part of learning a language is also training your listening skills and these lessons are exactly for that. First you hear a short conversation and then we explain you each part of the conversation step by step.

This not only trains your listening skills but also gives you an understanding about the sentence structure and speaking habits of the Thai language. The video of this lesson, transcript and PDF are available for Premium Members.

The biggest problem for us foreigners who learn Thai is that we are not used to phonetic languages. In many Asian languages a word that is spoken with a different pronunciation can have a different meaning. In this episode we focus on the five different tones that are used in the Thai language. As an example we use the word “mai”.

Here are the different meanings and uses of the word:

The word mai:

is used to form other words if you say it with a middle tone

means “new” if you say it with a low tone

is used at the end of a sentence to make it a question if you say it with a high tone

means “silk” if you say it with a rising tone
